Canada’s New All-Electric Train-Plane Hybrid Travels Faster Than a Jet over 600 mph.

The new FluxJet will be quicker than a private jet and cheaper, too.

Canadians will soon have a zippy new way to get around—if TransPod has anything to say about it, that is.

The Canadian start-up recently unveiled a hybrid between an aircraft and a train that it claims will transform travel in the Great White North. The fully electric FluxJet will be able to soar at more than 621 mph sans emissions. For comparison, that’s a little quicker than the average private jet or about three times faster than a high-speed train.

The plane without wings, as the company calls it, is based on a new field of physics called “veillance flux” and features an innovative “contactless power transmission.” It is also equipped with aerodynamic and propulsion systems designed specifically to reduce friction. Essentially, a vacuum tube setup allows the magnetically levitated pods to travel at a faster speed than trains, cars and jets.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=MmtwfXG2MfE%3Ffeature%3Doembed

The FluxJet can carry up to 54 passengers plus two wheelchairs. It’s also fitted with four luggage racks and can transport up to 10 tons of cargo. It will travel along a dedicated tube system known as the TransPod line to alleviate congestion on main roads and highways. It’s not dissimilar to Virgin’s Hyperloop network of 600 mph pods that is set to roll out in 2030. The TransPod line will have stations in key locations and major cities, with pods expected to depart every two minutes. It will reportedly cost approximately 44 percent less than a plane ticket.

The FluxJet can reportedly reach 621 mph. TransPod

What’s more, the project is expected to create up to 140,000 jobs and add $19.2 billion to Canada’s GDP throughout construction. It will also reduce CO2 emissions by about 636,000 tonnes per year. The plan appears to be gaining momentum, too. TransPod recently received $550 million in financing and kicked off the next phase of an $18 billion US infrastructure project to build the TransPod Line between Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. (It’ll reportedly get you to either city in just 45 minutes.)

The company also recently presented a scaled-down FluxJet at an event in Toronto to showcase its flight capabilities. The demo model executed a take-off and landing procedure within its guideway. (You can watch the demo footage above.)

Inside, there’s room for 54 passengers. TransPod

“All the hard work over the past few years has led to this milestone moment where talk is becoming a reality,” TransPod’s cofounder and CEO Sebastien Gendron said in a statement. “The technology is proven, and we have the confidence of investors, governments and partners to continue pushing forward to redefine transportation effectively.”

Keep an eye on the North, folks.

Distillery Tour Will Let You Take Home an Entire Barrel of Whiskey $38,000

This New Helicopter-Borne Jack Daniel’s

Fans of Kentucky bourbon could opt for a Maker’s Mark tour instead.

Jack Daniel's DistilleryMint Julep

Visiting a whiskey distillery is fun, but have you ever thought how much more fun it would be to get dropped off by a helicopter Magnum P.I. style and bring home a barrel of whiskey at the end of your visit? If you have, tour company Mint Julep has you covered with a pair of expensive luxury packages that sound like a pretty good time.

The first Mint Julep experience is called “Roll Out the Barrel” at Jack Daniel’s, a multi-day trip during which you’ll be able to explore Nashville and visit the distillery in Lynchburg. You’ll be picked up at the airport and have black car service for a total of 12 hours during your two-night stay at the Omni Hotel in downtown Nashville. When you’re ready to head to the distillery, traffic won’t be an issue because a chartered helicopter will get you there in a flash. During your visit you’ll get to enjoy a tour of the production process from distillation to maturation and participate in a Jack Daniel’s tasting. The icing on this whiskey cake is a private barrel selection. After you make your pick, the distillery will bottle the whiskey for you (the yield is usually around 200 bottles) with personalized labels, customized bronze medallions, a crystal decanter and a barrelhead with your name on it to commemorate the experience. And last but not least, you will have a classic Southern food lunch at the famous Miss Mary Bobo’s Restaurant next door to the distillery. There is one add-on to consider–you can order customized boots from Lucchese Bootmaker worth up to $2,500. The price for this high roller tour is $38,000 for a total of four people.

Helicopter to the distilleries Mint Julep

If Kentucky bourbon is more your style than Tennessee whiskey, there’s a similar tour available at the Maker’s Mark distillery outside of Louisville in rural Loretto, KY. For this tour, you can stay in either Louisville or Nashville at the Omni. Either way, a helicopter will whisk you to the Maker’s Mark distillery for a complete tour, a tasting and, of course, a private barrel selection. You can either pick up these bottles in person, or they will be shipped to a retailer for you to collect in your home state. Your distillery visit will conclude with a farm-to-table meal from Star Hill Farm at the Innovation Garden before you take to the air and return to your hotel. The price is a bit higher for this experience, at $42,000 for four people.

Mint Julep recommends booking these tours up to three months in advance to secure a date, and weekends are harder to schedule (and no tours on Sundays). But if you can score a spot before the holidays this year, there will be no need to go gift shopping with all that whiskey you’ll be brin

Most international travelers are accustomed to spending six to ten hours on board, often overnight. For those with the ability to sleep while flying, the result is a comfortable flight with only a few hours spent trying to occupy their time. However, some long-haul flights are a different animal. It’s easy to sleep half a flight away on a trip that’s less than ten hours. But travelers would need a travel pillow that was downright magical to be able to do so on the world’s longest flight, lasting almost nineteen hours!

Due to the pandemic, many of these more extreme long-haul routes were halted. Now, as the world moves on from the era of travel restrictions, many of these extra-long-haul routes are being reinstated. Do you think you could handle the top 10?

Upgrades Go A Long Way For Long-Hauls

Long-haul flights are a different kind of flying experience. Hence, they require a different approach to make the trip as comfortable as possible. Firstly, if there was ever a time to upgrade to a higher flying class, it’s for flights like the ones above. Most travelers don’t upgrade to business or first class, especially for shorter flights. Indeed, the cost vs. benefit for shorter flights often doesn’t make it worth upgrading. However, if you’re going to be on a plane for almost 19 hours, upgrading in any way is going to make the whole experience much nicer.

https://5fdc67e90cd39ce2cd3db3576f4a1a53.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html
First class on emirates

Some airlines, such as Singapore Airlines, offer suites with a personal lounge chair and lie-flat bed, albeit with a hefty price tag (Over $9,000 one way from JFK to SIN). For the other 99% of travelers, it’s probably more realistic to pay an additional fee for a seat with more legroom. After 10+ hours of sitting in a cramped economy seat, paying extra for more legroom will sound more and more enticing.

Sleep Smart

Woman sleeping on a plane

An extra-long-haul flight typically entails a significant time change. In fact, those undertaking the JFK to SIN route will find the date has changed by two days by the time they landTalk about jet lag! Since you already know what the time difference will be, it can be helpful to go ahead and act like you are in the new time zone. If you can, try sleeping during your destination’s nighttime. You’ll be ahead of the game when you land, meaning you can start exploring without jet lag much faster.

Could You Do It?

The flights above are so long that some travelers may think twice about booking. However, the flight itself could be a unique and interesting experience if done right. For travelers who aren’t up to the challenge, perhaps breaking up the journey into segments could be a better option. Plus, this would allow for more sightseeing and exploring during a stopover. Regardless, long-haul flights are making a comeback, hopefully for good.

Shelby American 1300 hp Code Red version GT500 over $200,000 just for the upgrade

Naming a car Code Red is ridiculous in the best way.

BY MACK HOGAN

AUG 23, 2022shelby american code red gt500

SHELBY AMERICAN

Tuning company Shelby American has announced a 1300-hp monster called the GT500 Code Red. The upgrade package starts at $209,995 and no, that doesn’t include the car itself.

That means you’ll have to supply your own GT500—itself nearly $100,000 in base form—to start the conversion. And despite the confusing name, it’s important to note that this isn’t a factory Ford effort. While the Blue Oval uses the Shelby name as a Mustang sub-brand, Shelby American is a completely separate entity known for tuner cars and projects like the carbon-bodied Shelby Cobra.

The Code Red project is one of the firm’s experimental builds, which usually don’t see production. This time, however, Shelby American says it’s making 10 units per model year of 2020, 2021, and 2022 GT500s. Those cars will be upgraded with an intercooled twin-turbo setup for the 5.2-liter V-8, custom pistons, a new exhaust, competition valves, new oil pumps, a reworked fuel system, an anti-lag system, and more.

Output on E85 is 1300-hp and 1000 lb-ft of torque. Run the car on pump gas and the claimed output falls to “over 1000” hp and 780 ft-lbs of torque, big gains over the 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of the standard car. To cope with the power, Code Red cars get Ford Performance sway bars, wider bodies, performance half shafts, retuned MagneRide, and wider tires. There’s no word on when the first one will be delivered, but we imagine interested buyers will be motivated by the limited production to move quickly.

65 Million Gulfstream G 650ER here is a look.

  • The Gulfstream G650ER is one of the world’s fastest and longest-range business aircraft.
  • Billionaires like Elon Musk own the jet, which was tracked by 19-year-old Jack Sweeney on Twitter earlier this year.
  • I toured the plane at the Farnborough International Airshow in England to see if it’s worth the price tag.

Launched in 2014, the Gulfstream G650ER is one of the world’s fastest and largest business aircraft, drawing in billionaire customers like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.

The ultra-long-haul flagship jet is equipped with two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines, which power its incredible 7,500-nautical-mile range and 0.925 Mach speed.

The range is 500 nautical miles longer than the jet’s predecessor — the Gulfstream G650.

The range and speed helped Gulfstream and Qatar Airways, which operates G650ER jets, break a world record for the fastest “round-the-world” flight in 2019, flying the aircraft pole-to-pole in less than 47 hours.

The same year, the G650ER flew another record-setting flight when it journeyed between Singapore and Tucson, Arizona, covering 8,379 nautical miles (9,600 miles) nonstop. The achievements are just two of the jet’s 120+ world speed records.

Celebrities like Musk and Bezos, as well as Bill Gates, have proven the jet’s capabilities, with Musk flying over 150,000 miles in 2018 alone. A bulk of his flights were around California, but he also flew overseas to places like Ireland and Israel.

Vietnam to make Apple Watch and MacBook for first time ever

Country benefits as tech giant looks to build more products outside of China

CHENG TING-FANG and LAULY LI, Nikkei Asia tech correspondentsAugust 17, 2022 11:04 JST

TAIPEI — Apple is in talks to make Apple Watches and MacBooks in Vietnam for the first time, marking a further win for the Southeast Asian country as the U.S. tech giant looks to diversify production away from China.

Apple suppliers Luxshare Precision Industry and Foxconn have started test production of the Apple Watch in northern Vietnam with the aim of producing the device outside of China for the very first time, three people with direct knowledge of the matter told Nikkei Asia.

Vietnam is already Apple’s most important production hub outside of China, producing a wide range of flagship products for the American company, including iPad tablets and AirPods earphones.

The Apple Watch is even more sophisticated, according to industry experts, who say that squeezing so many components into such a small case requires a high degree of technological skill. Producing the device would be a win for Vietnam as the country attempts to further upgrade its tech manufacturing sector.

Apple has also continued to shift iPad production to Vietnam after COVID-related lockdowns in Shanghai caused massive supply chain disruptions. BYD of China was the first to assist with this shift, though sources told Nikkei Asia that Foxconn, too, is now helping build more iPads in the Southeast Asian nation. Apple is also in talks with suppliers to build test production lines for its HomePod smart speakers in Vietnam, the people said.

On the MacBook front, Apple has asked suppliers to set up a test production line in Vietnam, two sources said. However, progress in moving mass production to the country has been slow, partly due to pandemic-related disruptions but also because notebook computer production involves a larger supply chain, multiple sources said. That network is currently centered on China and very cost-competitive, they added.

“AirPods, Apple Watch, HomePod and more … Apple has big plans in Vietnam, apart from iPhone manufacturing,” one of the people with direct knowledge of the situation said. “The components for MacBooks have become more modularized than in the past, which makes it easier to produce the laptops outside of China. But how to make it cost-competitive is another challenge.”

Apple’s diversification to Vietnam started with AirPods, which went into mass production there in 2020. The earphones were among the first Apple products whose assembly was shifted out of China after a trade war between Washington and Beijing broke out under former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The move signaled a change of approach for Apple, which had depended on China for almost all of its production needs for decades.

For Vietnam, Apple’s shift — and the U.S.-China tensions more broadly — have been a boon. The number of Apple suppliers with facilities in the country has increased to at least 22 from 14 in 2018, according to Nikkei Asia’s analysis of Apple’s latest available suppliers list and interviews with sources. Many other major electronics manufacturers like Google, Dell and Amazon have also set up production in Vietnam to diversify beyond China, Nikkei Asia has previously reported.

Eddie Han, a senior analyst with Isaiah Research, told Nikkei Asia that electronics makers are trying to strike a balance amid Washington-Beijing tensions.

“Geographically, we find major international electronics brands such as Apple and Samsung trying to lower dependence on making products inside China. But on the other hand, these international players have adopted more China-based suppliers such as Luxshare and BYD for Apple, and Huaqin for Samsung to build more of their products,” Han said. “Those are moves to balance the geopolitical impacts.”

“China’s role as the world’s most important factory has been challenged since the trade war and then later its energy and zero-COVID policies,” Han said. “That really makes Vietnam, which is close to China, an ideal destination for many electronics makers as the nation gradually grows its supply chain ecosystem.”

Apple, Foxconn and Luxshare did not respond to Nikkei Asia’s request for comment.
